Europeanvaction1979/day5

My father was in the USAF. We spent nearly nine years in Europe. We lived in Greece, Italy and England. Every few years my Grandparents would come to visit. When they did, we were off for a five week journey across Europe. My grandmother kept a journal of our travels. Recently while cleaning out a closet, my Mother came across the journals. The memories came flying back! I decided to share these journels with you. Each day I will post a chapter as she has written them. I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did.

The first Journal was in 1979. We lived in Hellenikon Greece.

Day 5-Wednesday May 30 1979
The day began with Jan and I paying a visit to Sean's classroom. The mothers had been invited for a luncheon prepared by the children. When the teacher learned that I would be in Greece, she included me.

We arrived at the base elementary school promptly at eleven-thirty. The school is not housed on the base, but rather in an old Greek hotel not far from the house.

It was evident that Sean felt rather important because he had not only his Mother, but Grandmother as well to share this time with his class. The children had outdone themselves with the lunch preparations, and to my surprise it was extremely tasty.

A quick "peek" into Ryan's class, where I was introduced, left me knowing that my Grandchildren were in a fine school getting a good education while in a foreign country. Everywhere I looked, I saw happy faces on the children and teachers alike.

The rest of the day was uneventful as we had nothing in particular planned. Jan remembered she had a practice ball game, so George and the boys accompanied her while Al Craig and I stayed at home.

Supper over, we spent the late afternoon hours sitting outdoors while the Greek neighbors were still busy indoors preparing their evening meals. The hours for meals are late in Greece. Lunch is eaten around two in the afternoon with dinner about nine at the earliest. At dark the mosquitoes drove us indoors where we indulged in several games of scrabble until it was time to retire.
