Europeanvaction1979/29

My father was in the USAF. We spent nearly nine years in Europe. We lived in Greece, Italy and England. Every few years my Grandparents would come to visit. When they did, we were off for a five week journey across Europe. My grandmother kept a journal of our travels. Recently while cleaning out a closet, my Mother came across the journals. The memories came flying back! I decided to share these journels with you. Each day I will post a chapter as she has written them. I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did.

The first Journal was in 1979. We lived in Hellenikon Greece.

Camp in Trulli

Day 29-Saturday, June 23 1979

Nine A.M.  With thunder rumbling in the distance, we vacated the bungalow after having breakfast at the camp restaurant.

Ominous black clouds rolled in off the coast bringing a hard, heavy rain and high winds that made Al have trouble keeping the VW under control.  It lasted only a few minutes then the fury stopped.

Around three we took the road to the Trulli Zone of Alberbello.  Since George had been confined to the hospital and missed this unusual village when we were here a few weeks ago, we wanted him to have a chance to see that it was all we had raved about.   An hour or so was spent puttering around the "trulli" shops then we drove to San Vito AS where we again obtained permission to use Columbus Park as 'our' campground.

We greeted the tree, under which we set up the tent, every blade of grass, the ants, playground area, and Boileau's Rest Room, like old friends.  For the first time in more years than I'd like to remember, I swung with the children on the swings, slid down a slide, and bounced on a spring bronco.  On a scale of one to ten, I rated this exercise as an eleven!

When our cookout was over, George, Craig and Al went to visit the Baker Nunn Observatory while Jan and I battled each other with the scrabble game and Sean and Ryan amused themselves with their cars.

This was our last night to camp out in Europe, so there was a small twinge of regret as I fell asleep later that night.
